Aleutian World War II National Historic Area preserves the remaining structures of Fort Schwatka, built during World War II to protect Dutch Harbor. Constructed atop Mount Ballyhoo, the American troops sent to this remote fort had to fight to dislodge Japanese forces from the Attu and Kiska Islands even as they had to constantly struggle against the terrible weather of this isolated northern island. The site also brings to mind the tragic forced removal of the local Unangan people from the area islands; these individuals were placed in internment camps in southeast Alaska while their home was used as a military site. Now, visitors can hike amongst the ruins of this fort and see the scope of the wartime efforts in this largely forgotten bit of American land. The island itself is difficult to reach, requiring either a plane or boat ride, both of which are largely dependent on weather conditions.
Open daily dawn - dusk.
